We love VIP Products, and their Tuffy and Mega Toy lines are terrific. They are extremely durable for stuffies, and last for months here at our house. These toys are NEVER in the toy box and get plenty of play. We specifically choose the toys that are at least 9 and usually 10 on the Tuff Scale rating. Basically, the stuffies with the black reinforced edging are the tough toys that work for us. All the toys you see in the photo above have been in play all winter long.
Now we have some good news from VIP Products! Here’s a special offer just for Ruff Toy Review readers! When you purchase your toys directly from VIP Products website (http://www.vipproducts.com/) you can get $7 off any toy or bed by using the coupon code below.
Earlier this week, we reviewed the Mighty Ball also by VIP Products, which is a big hit here at our house. This toy, the Mighty Lenny Leopard Safari Dog Toy, unfortunately, has not been so lucky. Even though VIP Products rates this toy as a 9 on their Dura-Scale, it didn’t last more than a day here. Before we knew it, there was stuffing everywhere, and what a lot of stuffing there was!
Mighty Lenny Leopard... not so mighty
This is the second disappointment in the Safari series. We also tried the Polar Bear stuffie back in November, and were equally disappointed. That toy got returned to the store the next day, but this toy, we kept since it was part of the Dog Toy Tester program. Read more
Another awesome toy from our friends at VIP Products. The Mighty Ball has been in the toy bucket for several months now and it’s held up remarkably well over the duration. No signs of wear on it, and it gets a lot of play.
The Mighty Ball is a fleece covered rubbery ball that squeaks, about 6″ in diameter. The ball is just the right size — large enough so that it doesn’t get lost under furniture, works well as a kick ball, but small enough to pick up and carry around. It’s also very flexible and soft on the mouth. Moxie likes to catch it with her paws and mouth while showing off her amazing talent for mid-air acrobatics. Cassie likes to catch it and then make it squeak and squeak and squeak till it drives us crazy and we toss it again, hoping Moxie will get it for a while. The toy’s round shape doesn’t make it a good tug or chew toy, which might account for its long wear.
The fleece does get a bit wet from all the mouthing, but not as much as a tennis ball or plain rubber ball. We’ve used this toy strictly as an indoor toy to keep it clean. The company states the toy does float if you want it for a pool toy. We’ll keep it inside though, since it’s soft and great for indoor play without worrying too much about knocking things about. The Tuffy’s Mega Ring Dog Toy is a big toy at 13″ x 13″ and the donut hole is large enough for both dogs to grab the middle and wear it around their face like the dreaded “cone of shame”. They’re both clowns and know how funny we think it is, so they do it a lot! It gets a lot of play as a tug toy and a throw toy, and even though it gets a lot of rough play, it’s still in perfect condition.
The Mega Ring’s tag boasts “Tiger Tested, Dog approved! Extremely durable pet toys that are great indoors and outdoors. Great for training and won’t hurt teeth or gums.” The VIP website has several videos of tigers, bears and wolves playing with these toys, so this will give you an idea of how tough they really are.
The Tuffy’s Mega Creature Large Octopus Dog Toy, Tiger Print is HUGE! At 23″ long, this toy doesn’t even fit in the toy bin. This is one of the dogs’ favorite “tug of war” toys because of all the legs to grab and shake. Cassie likes to shake this toy up and over her head as though she’s giving herself a good flogging.
The Mega Creature Octopus is a Giant Toy
The construction on these toys is impressive:
Seven Rows of Stitching Each toy’s seven layers of material are sewn together with two rows of linear stitching and two rows of cross stitching. The four rows of stitching are protected with an industrial grade luggage material that is sewn 3 more times.
Seven Layers of Material Three layers of 600 Denier industrial grade material, three layers of plastic coating and finally one layer of soft fleece. All seven layers are rolled together and then sewn with a one inch cross pattern to prevent layer separation.
Protective Webbing Additional industrial grade luggage material is sewn around the outside edge with three rows of stitching to cover and protect the first four rows of stitching.
Squeaker Safety Pockets Each Squeaker is safe and quiet because they are sewn into a nylon safety pocket beneath seven layers of material.
These toys are machine washable (air dry) and float.
Both toys are rated 10 on the “Tuffy” scale. We haven’t tried them as pool toys, and probably won’t, since they are so popular as house toys. But we can enthusiastically recommend both these toys as TOUGH and FUN toys that will get a lot of play. They are a bit more expensive than other toys we’ve reviewed, because of their size, but I think it’s worth paying extra for a toy that lasts!
Here is Ruff Toy Reviews 2010 Top 10 Durable Dog Toys List of the most durable, safe and fun dog toys out there for dogs who love their toys to death. We have personally tried all of these toys with our dogs, and wanted to share the top dog toys under $20 that would make a great holiday gift for any dog that loves to play rough! Here are our favorite dog toys… in no particular order.
Zanies Rubber Chicken
The Zanies Rubber Chicken is a surprisingly durable toy that is silly and floppy. Stands up to shaking and tugging. We’ve had this toy for about a year, and it’s still going strong. The dogs love it. Beware of slobber. Full review
Nylabone Double Action Chew
The Double Action Chew by Nylabone is a very long lasting chew that doubles as a rubber toy. As with all Nylabone products, look for the “for aggressive chewers” label for the toughest chewers. Full review
Planet Dog Orbee Bone
The Planet Dog Orbee Bone is a wiggly rubber bone that is soft on the mouth, but very durable. You can fill the hollow center with treats. This bone also floats and makes a great pool toy. Full Review
Tuffy's Ultimate Tug of War
Tuffy’s Ultimate Tug-O-War Dog Toy takes a lot of abuse in our house, and is still going strong after two years of rough play. This is a big toy at 22 inches long, and the dogs love carrying such a big toy around. This one is on our own list for replacement this year. Shh, don’t tell the dogs! Full review
KONG Snugga Wubba Dog Toy
The Snugga Wubba Dog Toy by KONG was one of the first stuffing free dog toys out there, and it was a big hit with the dogs and with me because it lasted a long time without leaving a stuffing mess all over the house. The Snugga Wubbas are fleecy soft, although they also come in classic rip stop material. But our dogs love the Snuggas best. This is one Cassie’s security blankets. A great tug toy and snuggie. Full review coming soon.
QT Dog Deer Antler Chews
QT Dog All Natural Chew Toy Antlers Deer Antlers are an all natural chew that you can feel good about. It’s not made from dead things, so if you are squeamish about pigs ears, hooves and other nasty sounding (and smelling) chews, deer antlers are a great alternative, plus they last a long, long time. These are harvested from from 100-percent naturally shed deer antlers, and are not smelly or slimy at all even after a good long chew. Full review coming soon.
Chuckit Ball Launcher
Chuckit! Ball Launcher Your best friend if you have a dog that needs to run! When we go to the beach, there are so many people there with Chuckit’s, I’m pretty sure we never come home with the same tennis ball. Moxie will chase a tennis ball until the cows come home and the Chuckit makes my arm almost bionic when it comes to really getting a long and accurate throw. You can’t go wrong with this toy. Get extra balls, though. You will need them. Full review
Planet Dog Orbee-Tuff Zoom Flyer
Planet Dog Orbee-Tuff Zoom Flyer We think Moxie was a Frisbee Dog in another life and we’re hoping to teach her to catch this fun toy like a pro. This toy is soft on the mouth, but very tough, and it floats, making it a favorite pool toy. Full review
Tuffy's Mega Square Ball
Tuffy’s Mega Square Ball Our dogs love stuffie toys, but they tear them to shreds… except for the Mega Series from VIP products. We now have several of these toys and the dogs love them. Equally important, I love them because they really do hold up. They are more expensive than other stuffed toys, but you really do get your money’s worth out of them. Full review
Zanies Rip Stop Training Dummy
Zanies Ripstop Training Dummy We got two of these for pool toys, thinking they wouldn’t last very long. We were wrong! Both of them are still going strong even though they are hands down, the absolute favorite pool toy. They float of course, but they are also easy to through and you can swing them around to get a nice long toss from them. An all around great throw toy. Full review
All of these products are available online and we’ve provided links to purchase. If you already have these toys, let us know what you think. And please tell us your own top durable toy favorites too, for future reviews. Happy holidays!

Rating: (5/5) There are two things you can plainly see from the video above: This is a very loud toy! Cassie simply adores it! What you might not readily see though is that this is a TOUGH toy and has lasted in our “house where dog toys go to die” for several months. Yes even […]
Rating: (1/5) The Kyjen folks sent me a new toy for the dogs to try out recently; Seamsters, The First Rawhide and Rubber Puzzle Toy, by Dog Games Puzzle Toys™. Touted to be a “Rewarding Long-Lasting Boredom Buster”, I thought this could be a great toy for my dogs. The package states: Restitchable for repeatable […]
